Very odd night indeed. It’s been raining solidly for two days now, it’s dark, the tubes gone down as per usual and I’ve just been told the 22nd of November is an annual day of depression, thankyou Van Helsing!. New one on me, but nonetheless an acceptable concept as I sit in the gloomy orange lighting of the B&G; back bar supping a sour tasting cider.
Just the setting then for one of the oddest performances seen at the B&G; in recent times. A bespectacled, black clad, Italian girl hunches over a few milk crates with an electric guitar and a small keyboard centre stage. Scratching away at the guitar, an incomprehensible, child like vocal drool in punctuated by coughing fits. An apologeticly modest crowd appauds wildly in support as our bespectacled friend eventually has to concede to the frog in her throat. Shame, but a fitting start for the ‘Day Of Depression’ one could argue!
Maybe it would be sensible to bail out now. But it’s still raining outside and hard. Besides the tubes are fucked so there’s no escape.
Three men looking dressed for a mornings hard labour on a building site have now taken to the stage. Bulgarian loons the B&G; guide states. Not a hint of a Bulgarian tone as the frontman raps over a live drummer, squelchy backing track and live guitarist. Shades of Beastie Boys or Gorillaz, but only shades. It’s certainly quirky but lacks any real impact in the tunes department for me. As they finish I am left with the overwhelming feeling that I’ve just been entertained but that I wouldn’t remember much about it in the very near future.
As Cleo Whip take to the stage we actually have something starting to resembe a small crowd gathering. They are slick. They sound a bit like Stereolab. Singer Evette sings in French, they are very Stereolab. Simple keys, hypnotic guitars, they glitter and are uplifting and all thoughts of depression are gone.
It seems a short set, the best ones always feel that way.
The cider is warming now, Snipe are the final offering tonight. Clanking, dubbed up backbeats and a lone figure dancing like a lost soul in a Glastonbury field in the early morning come down smogginess. Vocal effects make Jen, the singer, sound like she’s been marooned in a large empty water tank in the middle of a desert. Terminal Cheesecake fronted by a Cocteau Twin in a large tank. A great if not slightly disturbing concept to end the night on as I sneak out in the hope of a last train south.
Day of depression? not for me at the death, the trains were actually running again.
Back on in time to carry all the people home who had’nt been able to come out in the first place. Disturbing and certainly not a great concept that one.

Hmm…sounds like you’re a good friend of Cleo Whip, who I thought were a bit dodgy, sorry. First act I didn’t see, as I walked in just as the second group were starting and they were the best act on that night by a country mile. Never heard of them before, but would definitely see them again. Interesting music and fantastic lyrics. Snipe had it’s moments too, though not sure the sound was OK for that. Having been to a few gigs at B&G; before, I didn’t plan to be there this Sat, but I’m not sorry I was – every once in a while you’ll chance upon some great new band, like the second one )imbeciles) – well done to them. Anyway, just my own humble opinion.

Totally impartial my friend. I know none of the acts personally which featured on Saturday 22nd.
As you’ve said it’s all about opinions.
Should I return the same critism of you over your view on the second band?
Non, that would be churlish.
The above was how I saw it, the below how you saw it.
There is really no need to (pardon the pun) make cheap snipes over someones opinions because you don’t share them.
For the record the last act (Snipe) had a different front of house sound because the sound was controlled from the stage by her on her own equipment. Her choice.
