Just never understood them myself.
I know the obvious, it’s just to make the bands get all their mates along to vote for them to win which in turn will fill the venue and make the bar a small fortune in the process.
Problem is you just end up with a venue/pub full of people who have no real interest in the bands/music long term and the bands are just left with this false sense of grandure and egoism if they win or come second or whatever.
Music has never been and never will be about competition, it’s all about taste.
Don’t matter if 2 or 2000 people like a band numbers are meaningless in this.
All it can mean is that a band can/should play a bigger or smaller place.
Battles Of The Bands are a travesty and only mug bands, crap bands, directionless muso bands will ever take part.
By all means try and win yourselves a new backline or something if it’s up for grabs or a support slot with Suzi Quatro, but don’t get any misconceptions a winners medal will mean your band is actually going to appeal to anyone.
It’s laughable.
