Does it really matter what a band is singing about, message and music, should it be a major consideration for gig promoters? Nice tunes, dodgey lyrics.
We wouldn’t book a band singing racist material, but religious beliefs?
Should christian rock bands/singers stick to playing religious events only or should they mingle with the Maryln Manson types etc on bills at the Bull & Gate etc if their music is up to scratch?
Surely if we say no that is discrimination.
Free speach and all that.
It’s a well known saying that the Devil has all the best tunes, is this really true or was Jesus really the original headbanger with that haircut or what?
Why do no christian bands sound like Sonic Youth?
Many questions to be answered………….

I don’t even know where to start answering that!
If I was in a Christian rock band, singing explicit Christian lyrics, I sure wouldn’t feel comfortable on a bill with Marilyn Manson (that joker, haha!) but I don’t think you’ll really get many of that type of band wanting to play B&G; and if you do, put them all on the same bill for a nice wholesome evening’s entertainment.

I think it depends on the band, for example I’m pretty sure a band like delerious wouldn’t get on with Mr Manson but if you had a more open minded Christian band, take zyllah as an example (Christian scremo – type band) I think they would appreciate the shot at the big time…but I have no idea what I’m talking about so err..yeah

another thing, to look at most Christian bands look perfectly "normal" and I think thats kinda important for the secret infiltration of the mainstream!
Band’s like Evanescence (*spits*) give people a bad view "all bands who claim to be Chrisitan are trying to do is get it big, any publicity good or bad is good enough for them"

‘infiltration of the mainstream’
We are talking bands who sing/aim to preach through their music here. A bunch of christians in a band is different if they are just singing the blues or the price of fish.
There really should be no problem here.
The danger though is if the ‘gullable’ were to start to belive in things which don’t really add up i.e the christian faith ‘where do the dinosaurs fit in!’ because they dug the music.
Otherwise we should be promoting free speach/views in music shouldn’t we?
I’m sure though that bands influencing fucked up teenagers to slash their wrists because life sucks through their music are gonna do a lot more harm than the God squad ever will.
Though is it really up to us as promoters to censor anything like this? After all those of us lucky enough are blessed with a couple of brain cells to work it out even if we do do our best each day to wipe them out.

to me christians have the gift to play the music that they are talented enuf 2 play. god doesnt look at the image, christians can be punks/goth/graebo’s/townies u name it! there is alot of religious dogma that goes with bein a christian that simply isnt true, its a walk of faith that i and many otha dudes are proud to admit and stand for. as for the music content to me the lyrics do play a part, but this doesnt mean that they have to be about god etc. they can be about girls, life in general, to me it is the example that they set is more crucial then anything. there is such a rich amount of christian alternative stuff out there, un4tun8ly it is a very much underground scene, as ppl in the UK particularly arent open minded about christianity. neway eunf of my talk, keep rockin on!

lyrical content, for many people, is what matters! People get fed up of listening to songs about being dumped or whatever! Christian music brings a new element into the lyrics, having faith to believe in such a hard world. About overcoming the odds to stand up and shout it to the world!

Exactly what ‘new element’ do christian rock bands bring to music snoo? You said they still sing about the same things ‘girls, life in general’.
They sing about finding escape through spiritual beliefs and myth, rather than finding escape in love, drugs or motorbikes, whatever?
What’s the new element? Dreams and ambitions of escapism in music is nothing new.

That’s a tough question to answer! The new element is basically not hearing stuff like Papa Roach (okay I know we all think it’s pap, I’m just using it as an example) and how they want to commit suicide, but hearing about hope and basically a different aspect to life. I don’t thinks there is anything new there, it’s just that I think that Christian rock music is as varied and accomlished as any other genre at the moment with some great bands around, it’s just a shame that there appears to be some sort of taboo around Christian bands. Like this: Bob: "I went to see a Christian Rock band last night." Dave: "Hahahahahahaahahahahahahaha!" Bob: "What’s so funny about that?" Dave: "You know the Devil has the best tunes" and then for some reason Dave thinks the discussion is over. It’s happened to me before.

Re the debate:
Looks like it’s fine to be christians in a rock band then, singing about girls (christain girls, no sex before wedlock types obviously! Hmmm young christian virgins, sorry I digress) and all things rock ‘n’ roll motorbikes, milkshakes, etc
But not so good to be in a band of christians preaching about the mythology that is the christian faith. No-one likes to be stuck in a lift with a born again christian 😉
Debate closed then or just beginning?…………….

there is a religious dogma surrounding the christian faith which covers up the fact that it essentially is a relationship with a dude who is ur best m8. there r loada problems with christianity as a religion, religion destroys the reality of being a christian. that probably made no sense!
as for standing in a lift with a christian, the dudes not goin 2 bite your head off or nethin (unless his a hungry raggey!)! n i dont endorse by any means *coughs* that you check out cephas at www.cephas.info!!!

In regard to your last post, MTM, most Christians know you don’t want a Bible bashing in the lift, and wont give you one. The few that do are rare and actually don’t put a good face on Christianity – we are normal people I assure you (well, maybe slightly quirky!).

Can you elaborate on this statement a little please?
All that REALLY matters is the Christian’s personal relationship with Jesus. Going to church is good, you get to meet other Christians and learn more about Jesus. But when you look at the big picture, for example the impending split in the church due to the appointment of a gay bishop, it detracts somewhat from the warm, welcoming and personal side of Christianity, and people say ‘ugh – organised religion. No thanks.’
That’s what I think anyway.
